Set in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, Sequim is known for its mild climate, sunny days, and easy-going pace. Often called “Sunny Sequim,” the area receives significantly less rainfall than much of Western Washington, making it comfortable to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year. The unique climate also supports the region’s well-known lavender farms, which bring color to the valley each summer and contribute to Sequim’s distinctive character.
Outdoor beauty is part of daily life here. Nearby beaches, waterfront parks, and scenic drives along the Strait provide plenty of opportunities to get outside. The area offers accessible walking paths, nature trails, and bird-watching, including the iconic Dungeness Spit, one of the longest natural sand spits in the United States. Just a short drive away, Olympic National Park offers mountain views, lakes, and forested landscapes to explore at a relaxed pace.
Sequim also provides the everyday conveniences that make day-to-day life simple. Downtown features a mix of locally owned shops, bookstores, coffee spots, and galleries, along with grocery stores, pharmacies, and professional services. A variety of casual restaurants and cafés offer easy options for meeting family and friends. The area is also home to a wide range of medical services, including primary care providers, specialty clinics, therapy services, and nearby hospital care. Despite these modern conveniences, Sequim has managed to preserve the charm of a bygone era. Friendly shopkeepers know their customers by name, neighbors stop to visit on the sidewalk, and life moves at a gentler pace, offering a refreshing reminder of the close-knit communities many people remember fondly.
Throughout the year, Sequim hosts a number of well-loved community events that bring people together and add to the town’s welcoming feel. The Sequim Irrigation Festival each May features a parade, live entertainment, arts and crafts, and activities that celebrate the region’s agricultural roots. Summer brings the Sequim Lavender Festival, when local farms open their fields, and the town fills with vendors and visitors. During the spring months, the Sequim Sunshine Festival brightens downtown with seasonal lights and festivities. Farmers’ markets, art walks, and holiday events continue throughout the year.
With its sunny climate, natural surroundings, accessible outdoor spaces, convenient shopping, and strong local healthcare resources, Sequim offers a comfortable setting with a relaxed pace and plenty to enjoy close to home. For many, spending time in Sequim feels a bit like stepping back to a simpler time, where community still matters, familiar faces are around every corner, and life’s everyday moments are meant to be savored.

Anchored by the Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, the area supports an extensive network of medical services – doctors, dentists, physical and occupational therapists, rehabilitation facilities, and pharmacies. In addition to the hospital in Port Angeles, the Olympic Medical Center maintains several healthcare facilities in Sequim that provide laboratory services, physical therapy, radiation oncology and health education programs.

Sunny Sequim a perfect destination
Surrounded by the majestic Olympic Peninsula and the beautiful Strait of Juan de Fuca, it’s no wonder that Sequim is regularly named one of the best places in the nation to retire. It has a small-town feeling with big-city amenities. It also boasts the best weather in Western Washington. Sequim is considered one of the most senior-friendly cities in the world! Live in the beauty of it all.
Sequim is located only 30 minutes from the Victoria Ferry, 40 minutes from Hurricane Ridge, an hour and a half from the Olympic rainforest and two hours from Seattle. It is in the Greater Puget Sound area and offers quick access if special services are needed, though distant enough to maintain a peaceful, tranquil lifestyle.
Climate
Sequim is located in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic Mountains. The weather in Sequim is noticeably dryer and milder than the rest of Western Washington. Sequim averages over 300 days a year with at least some sunshine and only 16 inches of annual rainfall. While Seattle residents look enviously at the “blue hole” over the Peninsula, we live under it. Because of the protection of the mountains, when our skies are cloudy most of our neighbors are getting soaked!
Sequim Lavender Festival
In addition to the region’s natural beauty, for over 20 years, the Sequim area has celebrated its magnificent fields of lavender with the world-famous Sequim Lavender Festival, a three-day event that draws visitors from all over the world.
